NOVA course: Introduction to Survey Sampling

Course description

The course is intended for students and researchers of ecology, natural resources, forestry, agriculture and environmental sciences who need to know how to sample natural populations and continuums in a statistically sound manner. The course will include pre-course self- study through literature reading, and post-course home exam.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to understand general concepts of survey sampling and design-based inference theory, and to analyse data based on designs such as simple random sampling, systematic sampling, unequal probability sampling, and distance sampling. Students will obtain skills in surveying natural populations through probability-sampling designs in a statistically sound manner.

Evaluation elements

The grading for the course is PASS / FAIL.

Estimated workload

  • 3 hours seminar
  • 40 hours lectures and exercises in the class
  • 15 hours independent work as pre-assignment
  • 32 hours independent work as post-assignment
